A system of heraldry, speculative and practical, with the true art of blazon, according to the most approved heralds in Europe: illustrated with suitable examples of armoria figures, and achievements of the most considerable surnames and families in Scotland, together with historical and genealogical memorials relative thereto.   There can be very little doubt that the "Display of Heraldry" is an accurate representation of the laws of Armory which governed the use of Arms at the date the book was written; and it correctly puts forward the opinions which were then accepted concerning the past history of the science. There are two points, however, which must be borne in mind. As for the content of the book itself - it really depends on what you want it for. For someone who has the basics of heraldry down, but who is struggling with the details of blazon, this isn't bad. As a comprehensive guide to how heraldry works, I would recommend Fox Davies first - this is definitely a dictionary, not a teaching manual.

INTRODUCTION. Heraldry is both a science and an art form. Developing out of the emblems and insignia born upon shields and banners during battle, heralrdy as a profession encompasses not only the devising, granting, and blazoning of arms, but also the tracing of genealogies, and determining and ruling on questions of rank or protocol.
